Draw us a happy cover. Please.
THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED.
At Anorak we thrive on supporting young talent. We have hundreds of ‘little editors’ around the globe who draw lovely things, write lovely stories and review books. We would like to give art students & recent graduates the opportunity to be part of our crazy colourful world and showcase their talent.
With this in mind, we are extremely excited and proud to launch a very special Anorak Design Mission, in collaboration with our lovely friends at Tate, Sharpie Pens, DesignToyStore and Human Empire.
Open to all art students from around the world, we are giving you the opportunity to come up with an innovative design for the cover of our Winter issue of Anorak magazine. The cover must contain the following words: ‘Anorak the happy mag for kids’ and must be fun.
Anything else, we leave up to your imagination and undoubtedly mind-boggling doodling skills.
What do you win?
The first prize will see their drawing on Anorak’s Winter outside back cover, and will receive a bundle of Tate goodies picked by Anorak’s creative director, Supermundane, worth £100 and a doodling pack from Sharpie Pens.
We will also pick three runners-up prizes: their drawings printed within the pages of the Winter issue of Anorak. Each will receive £50 Tate book vouchers, a doodling pack worth £25 from Sharpie Pens, a £25 voucher from the DesignerToyStore and a ‘Tricky’ t-shirt by Human Empire.

Is it possible to enter if you have just graduated??? Would be dream come true to submit a cover for Anorak!
how about someone who graduated this year?
Aw, teachers with great love for children’s book illustration not permitted to enter? :-( Sniff, sniff!
(I will tell all my students about it though.)
Hello
Yes we have opened the competition up to 2009 art graduates too.
Good luck!
Oh no!! Any way you could squeeze in recent graduates from 2008 as well?? ;`(
I’m not an art student (yet) :( just curious why that’s a rule? I would love to enter but don’t have that oneee teeny tiny specific haha. Is there anyyy way around it?
Shame I am a 2008 graduate student. Would have been great to enter. Maybe next time!
Hello I am a photography student are you only looking for illustration designs?
Thanks
Marie-Louise
Sorry Marie-Louise our magazine is primarily illustrated so it’s drawings only.
Are we allowed to post sketches, progress, and final art for this contest on our personal websites before the competition is over, or must we refrain from that until the results are announced?
Also, the guidelines state that the art has to be 220mm x 220mm AND include the text “Anorak the happy mag for kids”
I’m guessing this is a mistake, since the regular covers have the 220mm x 220mm image in -addition- to the “Anorak” title. Or am I wrong, and should the square illustration also include the title text?
And if so, must we use the official anorak font?
Confused about the format a little,
You say 220mm by 220mm which obviously leaves a square area for the design to be placed within the cover layout, yet you also ask to include the words ‘Anorak the happy mag for kids’. Is this as well as the mast head? seems a bit odd to have the name of the magazine on the cover twice. Also for those of a typographic bent maybe it would be more interesting to be able to play with the mast head as part of the design.
Merci
Can you enter if you are just starting an MA in illustration???
Cool site, love the info.
Hello All
Sorry it is a mistake, should have said 220mm x 260mm.
You can post your sketches online, on your own site, not a problem at all.
Again sincere apologies. Thank you for pointing this out.
x
PS. You don’t have to use Anorak’s font, do what you wish.
why oh why am i not a student! i want to hop back to studenthood just so i can join this!
Hi,
Can you post Anorak’s logo to use on the cover?
Thanks.
I have an idea for a piece, but I want to stitch my illustration rather than draw with a pencil, pen etc. is this an acceptable entry?
Kelly,
Stitching is totally acceptable!
Good luck.
Hi, I’ve read the posts about the header? Do we have to use the Anorak header? or do we incorporate the word ‘anorak’ within the actual piece? thanks!
Hi
is an A-level equivalent to an HND, I was told it was but wanted to check where you stood on the matter ?
heeeee! i’m so excited to do this project!
Hi, just wondering if you want a ‘rough’ entered, or a more ‘finished’ image say in photoshop or illustrator? And do you want the Anorak character included in the design?
Thanks!
Emily, your drawing should be final and delivered as a jpeg. You do not have to include the Anorak character, it’s entirely up to you.
Happy drawing.
Is there a theme for the winter issue? Or is that left up to us..? =/ (Sorry, I’m new to the mag!)
Hello ‘shroom, the theme of your cover is up to you. Happy Drawing.
Hi Cathy, any deadline for submissions??
30th October.
Thanks Cathy! =)
Do I have to put main character on the cover?
Hey chaps! (and chappesses)
Can i still enter if im completing just my first year of uni?
Many thanks!
Denni, yes you can!
Happy drawing.
Is there an age limit for this competition?
hi i was just wondering, sorry if this has already been mentioned :(
when you say drawing, does that mean you can use pens and felt tips as well as pencils? Also can we use inks or watercolours to colour in? And is it ok to use use photoshop or does it have to be traditional medium? Thanks
Hello Lisa
You can use any material/methods you like to design the cover: so pens, photoshop, felt, wood anything you want!
