Jovial Woods make Anorak happy.
Adam Higton lives in woods where he sings to wizards and fairies. When he doesn’t sing, he draws. Wizards, fairies, woodlands, friendly spiders, he draws it all magnificently. His new woodland venture is called Jovial Woods and he takes a break from the forest to tell us about it.
Hello Adam, what is Jovial Woods?
The ‘Jovial Woods Collection of Artist Books’ is a non-profit publishing project that I formed with the intent of bringing together a dazzling display of artworks from a wide variety of practicing artists, illustrators and musicians, those of whom make beautiful, exquisite and exciting works, and share the same intent and devoition in using the artist book as a platform to introduce their wonderful works to the general public. I have invited each artist to produce an exclusive artist book for the collection, which will then be exhibited through a series of special book-browsing events, set in a wide variety of fun, intimate and sometimes unfamiliar environments.
What are your news?
While all is quiet in the Jovial Woods for the time being… as the artists whittle away on their publications… I am continuing to approach the artists that I love and will be inviting them to contribute to the collection. Today the wonderful artists Merjin Hos and Andreas Samuelsson, have just recently confirmed, and will be producing a new book for the collection in the next few months, and the lovely chaps at the Human Empire shop have invited the collection over to Hamburg for an exhibition sometime in the near future ,which I am very excited about!
Describe a happy episode of your childhood.
Christmas Time was always a happy time at our house and we had lots of visitors. I remember when my nan used to come and stay; it was always very joyous, she would always start giggling and feeling merry after a glass of sherry or two, and her Jack Russell ‘Patch’ used to steal and chew up the toys, and would get into a funny grumpy old sulk if you told him off. Every year I would watch the Snowman on VHS and make promises not to cry, but it would always end in tears after he melted… And ha, one year I was decorating the Christmas tree and I stood on the armchair, leaning forwards over the backrest, reaching up to put a decoration on the tree and the chair toppled backwards… I plummeted head first into the tree! My Dad, goodness, he laughed so much… I was trying to hold back the tears and when I started blubbering, he roared with laughter! It was hilarious now thinking about it, but yes I felt quite stupid at the time! Hehe.
Thank you Adam and good luck with the woods!
